Surfers Against Sewage are one of the most successful marine conservation and campaigning charities in the UK and has been growing over the last 30 years, since the charity began as a response from the surfing community to the shocking state of the local coastlines. Made up of water lovers who want to protect the ocean and all it makes possible, they take action on the ground that triggers change at the top. 

Through their innovative and ambitious campaigning and education programmes, they are building a community of Ocean Activists that cares deeply about the planet that we live on and the ocean that covers the vast majority of it. 

Why do they do it? 

“We love the water. For what it does and how it makes us feel. We know that for people to thrive, the ocean has to thrive too – and vice versa. And we only have a few years left to tackle the near-irreversible damage that’s destroying ocean environments. This is the Ocean Decade. It’s time to act.”

By rallying ocean-loving individuals to get involved in campaigns and actions to protect the ocean and all it makes possible.

By calling on the governments and engaging them on issues affecting the ocean, people and planet. They also lobby for policies and laws that will create a cleaner and safer marine environment for everyone.

By educating and opening peoples eye to ocean related issues and sharing easy, sustainable ways they can help.

By challenging the industry and holding go businesses to account, encouraging them to make better choices, raise standards and take responsibility for the future of the ocean and planet.

Their impact...

So far, Surfers Against Sewage have made an incredible difference to our coastlines and oceans. 98.5% of bathing waters have now passed the Bathing Water Directives minimum standards (up 27% since 1990), although they do stress that there is still work to do on this. 6 million people also supported them and the campaign for the plastic bag charge, meaning that 6 billion plastic bags were prevented from damaging marine environments.  They also have the biggest beach clean volunteer community in the UK.

We’ve known about Surfers Against Sewage for quite a while now. Being based in the UK, we’ve heard all about their activist work and their impressive Million Mile Clean campaign.

With their rebellious activist roots and punk attitude toward cleaning up the UK coastline, we immediately felt a connection—Surfers Against Sewage and P&Co definitely share a sense of boldness and attitude. This cause hits close to home for us. Even though we’re based in the Midlands, far from the coast, we all have a love for our coastlines. They’re places of escapism for many on our team, and we’re passionate about supporting Surfers Against Sewage in their mission to clean up a million miles of coastline and fight against the dumping of raw sewage into the ocean.
