HOW TO LAYER P&CO

As the mornings get cooler and the weather becomes less predictable, it's the time of year when a wardrobe starts to come together. The pieces you've worn all summer take on a new role, jackets come back into rotation, and different fabrics, colours and shapes start working together.

That's where P&Co is at its best.

Our latest autumn collection was built with layering in mind, bringing together hardwearing ripstop, waxed canvas, heavyweight denim, brushed flannel, textured knits and washed jersey, all inspired by the landscapes of the great outdoors, heritage workwear and traditional outdoor clothing.

You don't need to start again every season, either. Your essential T-shirts, favourite outerwear, everyday denim and go-to trousers all have a place, and a few new layers can open up plenty of new ways to wear them.

Here's how to layer P&Co.

START WITH A GOOD FOUNDATION

Every layered outfit needs somewhere to start, and for autumn that usually means a T-shirt or long sleeve that feels comfortable enough to wear on its own.

A boxy T-shirt creates a strong foundation beneath an open shirt or jacket, while a long sleeve can add another layer of depth underneath a short-sleeve T-shirt, shirt, knit or sweatshirt. You don't always need the first layer to make a statement; sometimes a collar, cuff or hem showing through is enough to bring the whole outfit together.

Choose something you'd happily wear on its own, then build from there.

BUILD UP, DON'T BULK UP

Think about the weight of each layer and build gradually, starting lighter against the body before adding more substantial fabrics as you move outwards.

A T-shirt can sit beneath a shirt, overshirt, lightweight knit or sweatshirt, with a jacket or heavier outer layer finishing the look. Mixing weights also keeps the outfit comfortable, allowing heavyweight jersey, brushed flannel and textured knits to work alongside lighter or more structured fabrics.

Every layer should add something, whether that's warmth, texture, colour or shape.

MIX YOUR TEXTURES

Texture is one of the easiest ways to make a layered outfit feel considered, and autumn gives you plenty to work with.

Brushed flannel, waxed canvas, ripstop, heavyweight denim, wool blends, jersey and ribbed cotton all bring a different character, and combining contrasting fabrics can add depth without making the outfit feel over-styled. A soft brushed shirt underneath canvas, a textured knit with denim, or a washed cotton base beneath a waxed outer layer are all simple ways to bring different surfaces together.

Let the fabrics do some of the work.

THINK IN LAYERS, NOT OUTFITS

A good autumn wardrobe gives each piece more than one job. A shirt can be worn on its own, open over a T-shirt or underneath a jacket, while a knit can work as the main layer one day and become part of a heavier combination when the temperature drops.

Start with the pieces you wear most and think about what each additional layer brings to the look. It might add warmth, break up the colour, introduce another texture or simply change the shape.

The more ways you can wear a piece, the more useful it becomes.

PLAY WITH PROPORTION

The shape of each piece matters too.

Boxier T-shirts and sweatshirts work naturally with relaxed outerwear, while wider-leg trousers can balance heavier layers through the top half. A closer-fitting long sleeve underneath a relaxed shirt or cardigan can add structure, while allowing a T-shirt hem or shirt tail to show can bring another dimension to the outfit.

The layers don't all need to be the same length or fit. Let them overlap and give each piece enough room to have its own shape.

USE COLOUR TO BUILD THE LOOK

The colour palette behind our autumn collection takes inspiration from vintage outdoor clothing and the earthy, sun-faded tones of 70s National Geographic covers, bringing together brown, olive, navy, washed black and ecru alongside burnt orange, teal, purple and lavender.

Start with a neutral foundation and introduce stronger colours through one or two layers. Different shades of brown, green and faded neutrals work naturally together, while a darker jacket can frame lighter colours underneath or a single hit of orange, teal or purple can bring energy to the whole look.

The colours don't need to match exactly. They just need to feel like they belong together.

LET THE SEASON DO THE WORK

Layering is there to make getting dressed easier when the weather changes throughout the day.

Start with a base layer you're comfortable wearing on its own, add something for warmth and finish with outerwear as needed. Some days a T-shirt and shirt will be enough, while others might call for a knit, hoodie or an extra layer between your base and jacket.

Build your wardrobe around combinations rather than a fixed number of layers, and you'll have more options whatever the day brings.

MAKE OLD AND NEW WORK TOGETHER

A new autumn collection should give you more ways to wear the things you already own.

The T-shirts you wore through summer become base layers, your everyday jeans work with heavier shirts and knits, and your favourite jackets come back into rotation over new colours, fabrics and shapes. Adding a few pieces each season allows a wardrobe to grow over time, creating more combinations rather than replacing everything that came before.

That's how we approach P&Co. New collections bring fresh ideas, but they're made to live alongside the pieces that earn their place in your wardrobe year after year.
