Behind the campaign

THE MAKING OF MT. REGENT NATURE RESERVE

THE INSPIRATION

Our latest autumn collection, Mt. Regent Nature Reserve, takes its inspiration from the nostalgic world of vintage hiking and outdoor sporting brands. It began with a collection of references that had gradually built up in the studio over time, from vintage clothing and old catalogues to the colours, fabrics and practical details that have always made outdoor clothing so interesting. We wanted to capture the feeling of escapism associated with getting away and spending time outdoors, while creating clothing with the practicality needed for everyday life.

Our Creative Director Lee, explained that the range grew from an interest in the textures, colours and lifestyles surrounding the great outdoors. That idea runs throughout the collection, which brings together influences from heritage workwear, traditional outdoor clothing and vintage sporting apparel. The process began by looking closely at the things that make old outdoor clothing so compelling, from the fade on an old piece of clothing and a particular fit to the practical details that give a piece its purpose.

Vintage outdoor lifestyle

"We're always adding to our collection of vintage clothing in the studio," Lee says.

"Whilst looking at our references it was clear that our favourites all had something unique. Whether it be the fade on one, the practicality of another or the fit of the next. We wanted to give this range that mix of vintage and new." That approach shaped the collection and became the starting point for the campaign, with every part of the shoot drawing from the same world of vintage outdoor clothing and the objects that surround it.

THE SEARCH FOR THE DETAILS

Before the shoot, we spent a day travelling around the Black Country, moving between vintage shops and anywhere else that looked like it might have something interesting hidden away. We had a rough idea of the kind of objects we wanted to find, with camping and outdoor equipment high on the list, but much of the enjoyment came from discovering things along the way and seeing how they could become part of the shoot.

Over the course of the day, we found old fishing equipment, a vintage tent, mess tins, sardine tins and ceramic camping crockery, alongside a collection of smaller trinkets and bits and bobs that gradually found their way into the set. Some were larger pieces that would naturally become part of the scene, while others were small enough to sit in the background or appear briefly within a frame. Every object brought something different, from colour, texture, age or simply a sense that it had already lived a life before finding its way into our studio.

That character was important throughout the collection. Vintage references often reveal themselves through the small things: faded fabric, worn edges, practical details and the marks that come with years of use. We found the same qualities in the objects we collected. A scratched mess tin, worn camping crockery or old piece of fishing equipment each brought its own texture and history, helping to create a set that felt layered and collected over time.

There was a natural connection between this process and the way we approach a P&Co collection. Vintage clothing has always been an important source of inspiration for us, and much of the creative process comes from finding something with character and looking closely at the details that make it special. The props became an extension of that process, with every object contributing to the wider story behind Mt. Regent Nature Reserve.

By the end of the day, we had gathered a mixture of camping equipment, fishing gear and smaller vintage finds, ready to bring into the studio and begin putting the campaign together.

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS INSIDE

The following morning, everything came together in the studio. The campaign was shot against a large landscape backdrop, which gave us a sense of the wider world behind the collection and alluded to the mountains, trails and open spaces that had influenced the range. In front of it, we began building the physical set from everything we had found the day before, gradually bringing the different pieces together around the Land Rover.

As everything came together, the set started to feel like a collection of things gathered over time, packed and ready for a journey.

The backdrop and the set worked together to create the atmosphere of the collection. The landscape behind the models gave the images a sense of place, while the physical objects in the foreground added texture and detail. The result allowed the inspiration behind Mt. Regent Nature Reserve to run through every part of the campaign, from the larger landscape in the background to the smallest objects placed around the set.

Saber also joined us in the studio for the day and became part of the campaign alongside the Land Rover and the collection of vintage finds. With the vehicle loaded up and surrounded by camping equipment and fishing gear, he fitted naturally into the scene and brought another layer of personality to the set. His presence added to the feeling of a real moment, surrounded by the things you might gather before heading out for a few days with nowhere in particular to be.

A WORLD BUILT AROUND THE CLOTHES

The same textures and materials that had informed the range worked naturally alongside the aged surfaces of the props we had collected. Ripstop, waxed canvas, heavyweight denim, brushed flannel and textured knits each brought their own character, sitting alongside worn canvas, aged metal, ceramic and fabric throughout the set.

Texture was an important part of the collection from the beginning, and the campaign gave us the opportunity to bring that into the environment around the clothing too. The mix of different materials created depth throughout the images, with practical outdoor equipment sitting alongside pieces developed through the same appreciation for durable fabrics and considered detailing.

The attention to detail throughout the campaign also reflected the work that had gone into creating the collection itself. Lee and the design team spent the season exploring new fabrics and techniques, from new appliqué styles and durable ripstops to spray washes that gave the fabrics an authentic, sun-faded appearance. Waxed ripstops were also used across parts of the headwear, drawing on the colourful outdoor styles that have influenced the collection.

"No stone has been left unturned, nor any path left untouched," Lee says. "The attention to detail in this P&Co collection is our most detailed collection to date." That same level of consideration carried through to the campaign, where every part of the set had been chosen for the texture, colour or character it could bring to the finished images.

COLOUR, TEXTURE AND CHARACTER

Colour was another important part of bringing the campaign together. We looked to ‘70s National Geographic covers when developing the palette for the collection, taking earthy tones as a starting point and introducing stronger shades of burnt orange, teal and purple throughout the range. Those colours became an important part of the visual identity of Mt. Regent Nature Reserve and gave us another thread to carry through the campaign.

The vintage objects we found brought their own colours into the set. Aged metal, faded canvas, worn fabric and old ceramics all carried softer, weathered tones that worked naturally alongside the collection. Nothing needed to be overly styled because the character was already there in the materials and finishes of the objects themselves.

This combination of colour and texture helped the whole campaign feel connected. The richer shades within the collection could sit alongside the faded and earthy tones of the props, while different materials created contrast throughout each image. The result was a set with plenty of depth and detail, where the clothing remained at the centre while everything around it helped build the wider world of the collection.
