A Brief History of the French Chore Jacket

Before it became a staple in the modern wardrobe, the French chore jacket, also known as the bleu de travail, was the uniform of the working class. Built to last and designed with purpose, this iconic piece of outerwear has a story stitched into every seam.

Dating back to the late 19th century, the chore jacket was originally worn by French labourers, factory workers, and farmers. Made from durable cotton drill or moleskin in a distinctive deep blue, it was functional first and foremost, featuring multiple patch pockets to hold tools, tobacco, or whatever was needed on the job. The simple boxy cut allowed for ease of movement, and the heavy fabric offered protection in gritty environments.

Over time, the chore jacket became more than just workwear. It evolved and was worn by artists in their studios, motorcyclists on the road, and eventually adopted by style-conscious subcultures across the globe. Today, it stands as a symbol of utility, authenticity, and timeless design.

At P&Co, we’re big believers in clothing that tells a story and this one’s got history in spades. That’s why we created our own take on the chore coat: the Vyse Chore Jacket in French Blue. A nod to the originals, but with a modern touch. Clean lines, tough twill fabric, and subtle detailing: built to be worn, lived in, and passed on.

We’ve always been inspired by garments that earn their character over time, and the Vyse is no different. Whether you’re out on the road, in the studio, or just doing your thing, this one’s made to move with you.
