THE P&CO KNITWEAR CARE GUIDE
As the colder months roll in, our latest autumn knitwear collection has officially arrived- from cosy cardigans to timeless jumpers for both men and women. Whether you’ve just treated yourself to a chunky cable-knit or a soft fine wool piece, taking proper care of your knitwear is the key to keeping it looking and feeling its best for years to come.
Here’s our simple guide to caring for your knits- because beautiful pieces deserve a little love.
BEAUTIFUL PIECES DESERVE LOVE
Wash with Care
Knits don’t need washing after every wear. In fact, over-washing can shorten their lifespan. When it’s time for a refresh, always check the care label first- most knits prefer a gentle hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent. Avoid twisting or wringing, which can stretch the fibres. If you use a machine, opt for a delicate or wool cycle and pop your knit in a mesh laundry bag for extra protection.
Tip: Lay flat to dry on a towel instead of hanging- this keeps your knit’s shape perfectly intact.
Store Them Properly
How you store your knitwear makes a huge difference. Hanging your knits can stretch out the shoulders and distort their shape over time. Instead, fold them neatly and keep them in a cool, dry place. If you’re tucking them away for the season, consider using breathable cotton storage bags or boxes to protect against dust and moths.
You can also add a few natural moth repellents- like cedar balls or lavender sachets- to keep your knits fresh and safe.
De-Pill and Refresh
Even the highest-quality knits can pill a little with wear- it’s a natural part of the fabric’s life. Use a fabric comb or de-pilling device to gently remove any fuzz and restore a smooth finish. To revive your knit between washes, try airing it out overnight or giving it a light steam to release wrinkles and odours.
Handle with Love
When putting on or taking off your knit, avoid pulling at the sleeves or neck. These small moments of care help maintain the garment’s original shape and elasticity.
Rotate and Rest
If you’ve fallen in love with a particular cardigan or jumper (and we wouldn’t blame you), try not to wear it every single day. Giving your knitwear a little rest between wears allows the natural fibres to relax and recover- extending its life even further.
Gentle washing, flat drying, careful storage, and mindful handling are all it takes to keep your knitwear looking as good as new. Treat them well, and they’ll reward you with comfort, warmth, and timeless style season after season.
