GOOD COMPANY - IN CONVERSATION WITH

laurie vincent

We’ve been big fans of Laurie Vincent and his music for years here at P&Co, and he quickly became part of the family after joining us at an event a few years back in a retro bowling alley we’d rented out in London. Since then, we’ve stayed connected, always inspired by his openness and ever-evolving perspective.

Meeting Laurie back then, we quickly realised there was far more to him than what appears on the surface. The way he speaks is raw and deeply honest and he’s truly someone who actively seeks out inspiration in all areas of life, and that’s clear to see through the many projects he’s poured himself into over the years - from music to tattooing, photography and even painting.

Most people know Laurie as one half of punk duo SOFT PLAY, but his creative output actually stretches far beyond that. He’s also one half of LARRY PINK THE HUMAN and, more recently, has formed Big Truck alongside drummer Sam Coppins, guitarist Asa Thallon and keyboardist Justin Myles. The band recently released their debut single, Central Reservation Blues, and we had the privilege of spending time with them ahead of their gig at The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington.

Before the show, we sat down with Laurie in our Spitalfields flagship store for a candid conversation with our Spitalfields flagship store manager, Abbie, that covered just about everything -  from self-doubt and personal style to artistic process and the importance of following ideas wherever they may lead. We chatted for hours, heading over to the Ten Bells Pub across the street for a beer, grabbing lunch and then having a quick tattoo session back at the shop.

From the evolution of his personal identity to the launch of Big Truck, Laurie offers an honest insight into the realities of building a creative life. He doesn’t sugar-coat things. He speaks openly about the story behind the band name - rooted in difficult experiences growing up - and about the self-doubt that still follows him to this day, despite being a Mercury Prize-nominated musician.

What stood out most was Laurie’s honesty around confidence and collaboration. He spoke openly about still needing encouragement from the people around him sometimes, and how Big Truck drummer Sam played an important role in helping him believe in this new project enough to bring it to life.

One of our favourite moments came when Laurie described his creative process as “pulling some magic thread” - following ideas instinctively without always knowing where they’ll lead. Sometimes they become songs, sometimes sketches or paintings, and sometimes they lead nowhere at all. But the important thing is allowing yourself to follow that thread in the first place.

I think we all need like someone to collaborate with to get our ideas out. Even if some people don't appear to - there might be a muse, there might be a friend, like a parent who facilitates you feeling the confidence to do something.

We also spoke about personal style and identity, with Laurie reflecting on how much his look has evolved over the years. Laughing that if you Google him he looks “like about 10 different humans,” he shared how his relationship with style has shifted from chasing rigid subcultures to embracing something more fluid and personal, taking inspiration from different worlds and making them his own.

It’s that openness that makes Laurie such a compelling person to talk to. He understands that growth is rarely linear or effortless; it’s often messy, uncomfortable and shaped by constant reinvention. But through all of that, he continues to trust his instincts and stay open to wherever the next idea might lead.
