the history of the henley
The henley has always been more than just another shirt. It’s lived many lives: from the riverside regattas of Oxfordshire to factory floors, from under-layers to style icons. What started as pure utility has become one of the most hard-working staples in any wardrobe. It’s also been a core piece in our Crafted Range for a number of years.
Built On The river
The story of the Henley begins in Henley-on-Thames in the 1800s. Crews rowing in the Henley Royal Regatta needed a uniform that didn’t get in the way. Collars were stripped off, plackets were kept short, and the first “henley” shirts were born. Lightweight, breathable, and tough enough for the race, they were built for function, not for show.
The Every day uniform
It wasn’t long before the design moved beyond the water. Working men picked it up as a reliable under-layer; simple, comfortable, and made to take a beating. Worn under heavy outerwear, it was a piece you didn’t think twice about. The kind of shirt that just worked.
A Quiet Icon
For decades, the henley stayed in the background, until designers and filmmakers brought it back into the spotlight in the late 20th century. It was the shirt that looked lived-in, a little tougher than a tee, but more laid-back than a polo. The kind of piece that said more by doing less. It’s a piece that has never truly gone out of style because of its versatility. It’s an easy go-to for both smart and casual looks, it layers well and looks better the more it’s worn. It doesn’t shout for attention, it just gets on with the job - like it always has.
Our Take
We’ve taken that history and built our own version: the Crafted Heavyweight Henley. Made from 300gsm organic cotton, finished with a button placket and considered details, it’s designed to last and to be worn hard.
